All except the apostles
Some of my favorite verses in the book of Acts are 8:1, 4-5, they read:
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria…4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there.
I’d always cherished these passages as a reminder of God’s sovereignty in the face of opposition. But recently I noticed something else happening in this text, specifically pertaining to the main characters. All the people preaching the gospel are…normal. Samaritans start getting saved & the original “Sending Church” (Antioch) gets planted and the apostles are in Jerusalem. So what’s my point? The Apostles held a critical role in the early church, but everyone was called. The same is true today. Men & women called to vocational ministry hold a critical role in the church but every disciple has a role to accomplish in God’s mission.
Clarify & Equip
If you are called to a role in God’s mission, how do you clarify what it is? How do you get equipped to carry it out? Answering those questions is one of the reasons The Summit Church has launched the Sam James Institute (SJI). SJI exists to equip people for their calling in God’s mission by connecting believers to personalized & challenging development opportunities. It’s our desire to raise up an army of people who clearly understand what God has called them to do and are well equipped to carry it out. SJI is available to folks both inside and outside of The Summit Church, so if you live in the R-DU area we’d love to have you join us this Sunday, August 30th to hear Pastor JD Greear share the vision of SJI & how you can get involved. More information & RSVP is available HERE.
